Deep Fried Spam Curds

Hey all,
Believe me, I KNOW how frustrating the spam issue is. I'm still trying to find out what can be done. If I had the money to throw at this-- I guarantee I would. If I win Powerball after all, then it'll get fixed right away... it's kind of hard without buying a ticket of course. ;) But if worrying about this was enough to fix it, it WOULD already be fixed!!!

... so why the title? My sister actually ate deep fried Spam curds at the Minnesota State Fair in August, and I don't think I'll ever be able to forget it... no matter how hard I try.

Not sure how the system is set up, but is there not other status levels between members and admin? Do these levels have authority to delete posts/reviews? Could you get a couple volunteers to be spam chasers?

@Teller of Tales : great idea. "Spam chasers..." I'm thinking of hurricane chasers for some reason. ;) Lyndsie just emailed me back so I'll see what can be done... I might even know more by tonight.

The difficult part of spam chasing is that you can't tell which accounts are going to be spam accounts until they post reviews, and then the only person who gets notified that there is a spammer is the person whose story was reviewed.

When I get spam reviews, I've been trying to delete ALL of that spammer's reviews before I delete the account, because once the account is deleted, there's no way to tell which stories that account left reviews on. And then it's super annoying when I am deleting spam reviews... and that account posts more WHILE I'M DELETING THEM!!!

Anyway, my annoyance level is high with the spam.

I'm going to talk to Lyndsie... and I think there's something we can do involving passwords for new members. Not an ideal solution, but it will be a lot better. More updates soon.

Deep fried spam curds does not sound like something that should be consumed.

Nutmeg44 @ Oct 27, 2017 07:41 pm

Nutmeg44: But they were. I saw it. Sis tried to offer me some. NO... no no no. Wrong in so many ways. ;)

Is there a way to delete the spam reviews? I’m happy to go back through mine and delete but can’t find a function. I don’t want to turn off notifications but I got three spam reviews just today. They are itching if not persistent. My stories are super old but I do sometimes get genuine reviews too. Lol. :)

Serenitey @ Nov 01, 2017 10:33 pm

*nothing if not persistent. Almost as annoying as typos.

Serenitey @ Nov 01, 2017 10:34 pm

@Serenitey old stories definitely still do get real reviews. We also get a lot of real new member registrations, which is why I hate that the only way to solve this problem right now is going to be to turn off SOMETHING that makes it easy for real people to register... whether it's autoregistration, autopasswords, autowhatever. I think there's a way to make it so that you can delete spam reviews on your own fics... let me look into it and get back to you. (a minute later)... Are your stories maybe under a different pen name? I can't find anything under Serenitey.

Anise @ Nov 02, 2017 11:32 am

No, it’s always been Serenitey. The main story that seems to be spammed is Whereever You Will Go if that helps?

Serenitey @ Nov 02, 2017 02:06 pm

And the spam reviews are GONE!!! :) I removed them from all of your fics. Thanks so much for letting me know about this. I'll also look into how to give you the ability to delete those spam reviews yourself... I'm at home doing the billing for the business today, so maybe later.

Anise @ Nov 02, 2017 02:43 pm

Now spam also in French, mon Dieu!

Thanks for the hard work, @Anise and all.

rowan_greenleaf @ Nov 05, 2017 10:14 pm

@rowan_greenleaf ugh, I know. Thanks for pointing it out! They are gone to spammer hell, and I got rid of a bunch of the reviews (not all though I don't think, because the clever technique I tried didn't exactly work 100%... ;) It's hard this month to keep on top of this because of going back to school, NaNo, and other things, but we WILL find a solution. We're still getting genuine members registering every day along with the spammers-- it's just, well, the spammers.
