D&G by rowan_greenleaf    (Reviews - 10)

"Like what you see?" he inquired.
"Yes," she said simply.
Draco rolled the sleeves of his shirt up to his elbows, his eyes never leaving hers. He walked up to her slowly, allowing his gaze to brazenly run down the length of her body. "And?" Another step and he was standing just in front of her, less than an arm's length away. "Do you intend to do something about it?"

Great, as always! :) You really have a gift for writing this unique Draco, instantly identifiable and memorable, privileged, admired, yet inwardly vulnerable. I really can't write anything in this variety of Draco, and when I've tried, the results are NOT pretty. :P So I leave him to you! :) (Does this mean you keep him around the house? ;)

Why Quidditch Gear Should Be Banned by Boogum    (Reviews - 6)

It was a truth universally acknowledged that Draco Malfoy was an arrogant tosspot who deserved to be pecked to death by magically modified penguins. It was also true that said tosspot happened to be extremely handsome, and looked far too good in his Quidditch gear for someone so prejudiced and unlikeable. Not that Ginny noticed.

ETA: I know what you mean about RL.... but I WILL tell you this. The entire reason I came back to D/G fanfic in the first place was that writing original fic just did not work without it. Fanfic was the support for my creativity. YMMV.

Anyway... I *will* be starting the ofic forums, hopefully by the end of the year. So watch for those! :)

SHE'S BACK! SHE'S BACK! YAY!
(running around screeching)
(trips over something)
(ow)

Anyway. What a great, fun little fic! So much descriptiveness, so many vivid images. (What exactly are magically modified penguins? In what way would they be modified? Kind of afraid to ask, actually...) Ginny is such a great unreliable narrator. One thing that sticks out here is that we know that we can't entirely trust her judgment, especially because she doesn't understand his motivations at all. So that's why, I think, this reads like the beginning to a longer fic. We want to know what comes after this. (NO... not trying to drop hints... really, really, really not.;) Anyway, thanks for posting, and good to see you back. :)

Author's Response: Not completely back (I still don't have time to actually read fanfiction these days),but yes I'm trying to post my stories again.

In any case, I'm glad you liked this one. I have no idea how those penguins were magically modified, but Ginny clearly feels that Draco deserves to be pecked to death by them, lol. She's definitely an unreliable narrator, and while I would love to say I'm going to expand on this, I somehow doubt I actually will. Life has got pretty crazy and I'm trying to write an original novel, so I'm not really planning to start new chaptered fics while I still have so many unfinished ones.

Another GREAT chapter! I meant to review this earlier, but things are pretty nuts around here... ;)

Anyway. You just have such a great portrayal of Ginny here. It's EXACTLY the way that I imagine she actually would have been during that seventh year. Brave, stubborn, reckless... the reader actually fears for her, because she's kind of dancing on a precipice, and she could fall off at any second. And I really like the way that you didn't immediately pair her up with Draco in detention. It would have been the obvious thing to do, but it wouldn't have been the *realistic* thing to do.

I'm going to post about this fic on our FB again, and I really am urging people to read it. There just aren't enough fics about this year in Ginny's life-- this is a great one! And you'd better continue it... don't make me come over there... ;)

Reviewer: Anise Signed
Date: Dec 23, 2013 Title: Chapter 6: Chapter 6

Wow, what a chapter!!

There's such a feeling of danger in this fic, and what makes it really interesting is that it's hard to put your finger on its exact source (as a reader.) There are the obvious specifics-- the Carrows, for instance-- but it's mainly a haunting, deadly atmosphere. We feel that Ginny is just dancing on the edge, and anything could happen to tip her over into disaster. But we also see *why* she'd be like this, and this is very much the way I would imagine her in her seventh year. I was really scared for Ginny by the end of the party... thankfully, Draco found her... well, I think it's a good thing, anyway... and your Blaise Zabini is really a dick, btw. ;)

Just how far Ginny and Harry actually took the physical part of their relationship is always a fascinating question. Seen strictly from a canon POV, I don't think they went very far. I have a hard time picturing a situation where they actually had sex before he left; I can see how that's a possible scenario, but it's a little hard to believe that things would have come to that. OTOH, we don't yet know if that's what happened or not in the reality of your fic. I would guess that Ginny did do more than what was spelled out in canon, but the fact that things *weren't* completed between her and Harry left her very frustrated. That seems to be the state of mind she's in now. Anyway, that's a very interesting question in terms of what her future relationship with Draco might be.

There are so many places where this could go! And just think, with the archive closed for two weeks, you'll have lots of time to work on writing... this fic, and you exchange fic, and all kinds of things. ;) More reasonably soon, I hope!

Author's Response: I don't like the idea of fully spelling out and indulging in details of Harry and Ginny's sex life (or rather, lack thereof) so I'm going to try to make it as vague as possible. Zabini and many others are going to assume she put out for Potter, but I don't think I'm going to have to hit a point where I need to explicitly confirm or deny that. I'm of the opinion that sex between Harry and Ginny was out of the question since their relationship was totally on the back burner while Harry was dealing with the whole... Well, everything he was dealing with that was more important that Ginny. Speaking of Zabini, it's always been a sore point for me that he said in canon (I believe) that he would never touch a blood-traitor like Ginny, despite being attracted to her. I was considering changing the rating to Extremely Naughty because although Ginny initiates the kiss, she isn't sober enough to consent properly, and she certainly doesn't consent to the bite. For the time being I've decided against it; "Definitely" should cover it for now. We'll see how later chapters go. Thanks for the encouragement--I'll try to update in a more timely fashion in the future. :)

It's such a treat to see a really good seventh-year fic! We certainly don't know what happened at Hogwarts then from canon, so there's lots of room to explore. And it's very believable-- Draco and Ginny's characters completely fit in with everything we know; actually, so does everyone else. Okay, I have to admit that I had a TEENTSY twinge of sympathy for the DADA teacher when she started talking about witch burning, because I think she's absolutely right... but it definitely went away when she Crucio'd Ginny. But that's probably what happened a lot that year. Harry had no interest in the subject of what really happened to Ginny, of course. :P (Writes on an imaginary chalkboard...

YES!! I DID R&R. Even before setting up the Kindle.

Again, this is a great fic, sometimes (as in this chapter) a disturbing one. But I think that given the subject matter, it does make sense. These characters feel, for want of a better word, *accurate.* The emotions, the behavior, the fears and anxieties, the sheer craziness of it all-- this really is believable as what actually would have been happening.

And, okay, I'm more inclined to think that Blaise was responsible for the banner. (Hopefully, this Blaise mellowed with the years, but yes, this is believable too for the time period...) ETA: Re: your comments on the Ch. 6 review. Believe me, I'm more than all for upping ratings to EN. However, if you have any non-con, you'd add a warning rather than changing the rating. I don't really see anything that would warrant that. I kind of wish that we had more options in the warnings so that authors could be really specific, but because of the efic issues, that isn't something that we can change right now. Anyway, the point is, there's no need to kick the rating up a notch unless the content itself goes there. (Which it could.;)

Another GREAT chapter! It's been a long time since I've seen any kind of Hogwarts-era fic that was this good.
This is the kind of thing that reminds us of why we shipped D/G in the first place. Their characters are truly rooted in canon, but they're also so much more than canon. They really are what they would have been during Ginny's sixth year, but they are what they *should* have been.

I do tend to think that Draco had to be at MM rather than at school during his 7th year, but a case can be made for the other possibility too. And this is exactly how it would have happened.

Anyway, I'm pimping this fic everywhere! ;) So I can't wait to see more.

She's back! Back, I tell you! And she's posting again! YAY!!!

(runs around maniacally, kind of like a Zumba class gone horribly wrong)

What an unusual take on Weasley family-Draco relations! This isn't something I've seen very often, and I'm really intrigued. This certainly is what Ron's mental state might have been at the time. I can see how the situation could have arisen. Still, ARE the Weasleys actually all under some kind of Confounding spell? The reader has to wonder... ;) More soon, I hope. And I've kind of had that happen at some points in the past... longer and more complex stories, and... NO!!!

(beats back rabid plot bunny with a plastic butter knife.)

So be careful. You don't want that to happen to you. ;)

Author's Response: rotfl. I adore the rabid plot bunny. I promise that thou shalt not be left in suspense for very long. This little fic has been in my "nearly completed" pile for some time and started beating on me, demanding that it be allowed to roam free. Believe it or not, the biggest hurdle was coming up with a proper title. Ron, who always seemed a bit two-dimensional to me in canon has a bit of potential, given the proper motivation. So, I'd been reading too many stories where Ginny was the one to become "best friends" with our darling Draco, and thought that it might be fun to twist it around a bit (I'm weird like that) . And thank you so much for the feedback!
Hugs!

Reviewer: Anise Signed
Date: Dec 21, 2013 Title: Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Why

I really, REALLY like the way this fic is going. Yes, this premise is unusual. But at this point in the fandom, canon as we know it was closed six years ago. (There will be more canon of a kind, and I think there's every reason to believe that it will have applicability to D/G... it's all in the essay on the Long-Lost Drive of Doom, AND IT WILL BE WRITTEN even if the experts can't recover the files...:(

But the point is that considering what we know now-- which is all we can ever be sure of-- HP canon is done. It's going to be a couple of years or so before we really get anything new. That means that it's hard to find new things if fics stick as closely as possible to the plain facts of what actually happened in canon. (It can be done-- Ginocide's amazing new fic *See Me Use You* is a good example. That's kind of the exception that proves the rule, though-- there just aren't enough fics exploring Ginny's seventh year at school.) We're not going to get far if all we do is keep going over and over and over the same ground.

And your fic is one that doesn't do that. Considering what we know, it is not at all unbelievable that Draco would be behaving and thinking this way after the war. It's just that it is not a common canon trope. But D/G was never explored in canon; we've always had to use our creativity to write about it. Draco and Ginny clearly never got together in the books or films; we always created that scenario. So now, we have to branch out and create NEW tropes if this fandom is to grow, and we can do it. We know it's possible, because others have done it (D/Hr being a great example.) We need writers like you to pull it off. And you're doing it very, very well. :) New aspects of everyone's character are turning up, and readers want to know how it's all going to play out.

So.... great work, and I hope to see more soon! :)

Author's Response: Thank you for such a lovely analysis! My favorite stories tend to be AU, so perhaps it's easier for me to reach into alternative scenarios. I look forward to your essay (so sorry that it suffered such an unfortunate setback!) because you've obviously put a great deal of thought into it. Have a wonderful holiday break, and thank you again for your wonderful work at promoting this site and inspiring all these wonderful writers to continue. :)
Best wishes!

Another great chapter! :)

You know, what I'm really enjoying about this is that we basically have a HAPPY Ginny. I have a hard time writing Happy!Ginnies. (Okay, should this be Ginnys or Ginnies? I never have figured that one out.) But she's a person with a great capacity for happiness-- I think it depends on whether or not her cup is full. We feel that this happiness is within her grasp, so to speak. But she may or may not take it.

Good to see Ginny and Blaise as friends, too!

Author's Response: Oh, does Ginny seem happy in this story? I agree that she (and anyone, really) has the capacity for happiness, and I think that's what makes Ginny in this story so tragic. She had happiness and now that she's lost her career, a time when she was the happiest in her life, she doesn't know what to do. "I think it depends on whether or not her cup is full. We feel that this happiness is within her grasp, so to speak. But she may or may not take it." Yes, I agree with this! She's kind of shooting herself in the foot and maybe pitying herself too much and for too long. Blaise has started to show her that she can find happiness anywhere, not just in a career, and Draco will slap a little sense into her next chapter, too. ;) Not really slap her, though, obviously. She's so close to happiness, but she kind of rejects it to spite herself and her friends/family. Thanks for the review! Glad you're enjoying the story! (And I think, technically, the plural of Ginny is Ginnys. ;))

Yay! I FINALLY got a chance to start reading this!!

(thinks guiltily about half-done December billing. Tomorrow, I promise! (yelled at sis, metaphorically speaking. ;)

Anyway. I really, really like this premise. This is the way that I could see Ginny reacting to her Quidditch career ending so abruptly. There's something about this Ginny that is fulfilled by that career, or would be fulfilled, which I think is true of a lot of the Ginnies out there. She's like a bird with clipped wings, but she has the courage and determination to strike out on a different path.

(jumps into fic briefly. GINNY!! The phantom hand pain is probably caused by trigger point issues. See a neuromuscular therapist. NOW.)

Anyway... I look forward to seeing where this goes. I should be able to get to the next chapter very soon. :) And when you figure out the size of the banner you want for your Tumblr blog, be sure to let me know. I've been using graphics programs for a VERY long time.

Author's Response: Thanks, Anise! I am so, so not an expert at graphic design, so I honestly don't know how big I would want my banner to be (or what big/small is?), but you'll be the first person I ask when I start trying to figure it out. ;) I'm glad you're liking the story so far! I've written Quidditch!Ginny before, and I think the career works really well for her. So the fact that she isn't satisfied with any career other than Quidditch is a liiiittle bit my own dissatisfaction with her having any other career other than Quidditch, too (because I'm uncreative like that XD). But mostly I wanted to write about job hunting because that was the theme of 2013 for me, and that's what all of my friends have been going through, so it's relevant and real. A bird with clipped wings is EXACTLY how Ginny feels in this story. But as you'll see eventually in chapter 3, she might be holding herself back from her own desires. Anyway, glad you like it so far, and thanks for the review!

This is a great one to expand. I know that quite a few one-shots can seem that way, but it doesn't mean that all of them really have that potential. I think that this one does. It's such a good beginning, and it's so intriguing to ponder what might have happened next. We really don't know what happened after the Malfoy trial (and I kind of hope we don't learn more than the vague statement we have now... some things should be left to the imagination, considering how Draco was treated in DH as a whole. :P

But this is one of the more interesting aspects of post-Hogwarts life to consider, for sure. If Draco wasn't convicted (and as far as we know, he wasn't), then what did happen? Was he just released into the wizarding world again? Or no? This is a very believable scenario, and I think that fics work best if they have *some kind* of basis in canon, regardless of far afield they range after that.

So... great job, and I, for one, would love to see more! (After Jan 26, of course!!)

Author's Response: If I expand this one, I definitely wouldn't go into more detail about Draco's imprisonment and trial. That's not what the story would be about, and I honestly don't think I could write an accurate or sincere trial scene anyway. To write anymore would probably seem fake. The important thing is just that Draco sat in jail until his trial was all over, it took almost six months, his parents were convicted, and he was freed. The rest of the story (and the part that has me pretty excited) is definitely the "what next." That's my favorite thing to write, I think, the parts of the story that DH skipped. I like to think about what actually happened to Draco and his family, to Ginny and her family, to Harry, to the world, because after the war they fought, after allll of their suffering and struggles, they would allll be changed people. And that's okay. I just like to see how they develop after such an ordeal. There are a lot of interesting motivations and feelings that BEGIN in DH or even earlier , but you don't see the resolution of them. *shakes fist at Epilogue of Doom* I'm glad you like this premise! I definitely hope to write more (after Jan 26, of course ;D). Thanks for the review!

The plot thickens! This is going to be a dark and interesting fic, I can see. Fics that are set in this particular scenario are really interesting, and I think it's because they explore a scenario that really could have happened in canon (if there didn't have to be a happy ending!) This is how all of these characters really might have ended up, and these are the reactions they might have had. I look forward very much to seeing where this goes! :)

And "No one dates the Dark Lord" is now officially my favorite line. ;) This is a fic where it definitely works to avoid throwing Draco and Ginny together immediately-- he's suspicious of her, we have no idea what she's thinking of him, and her motives in general are mysterious, to say the least. I look forward to more!

Against her better judgment, once Ginny felt his hands around her waist or in her hair, she lost all self control and began to kiss him back. She wrapped her arms around his back and dug into his skin when his hands touched her thighs. He placed her on the kitchen table with ease, pulling his mouth from hers.

A very interesting fic! Married!DG fics can really be intriguing. How WOULD these two actually work things out in the long term? Both Draco and Ginny could be very hard to live with in their own ways. But the scenario you've set up by the end means that I think they're at least committed to trying.... how is it going to work out, though? It's an open ending even though it doesn't seem to be at first, and it leaves the reader with a lot of interesting speculations about the future.
