I've heard the term, but what is a beta reader?
Solution
A beta reader is someone who reads over your fic and makes comments before you submit it. (It comes from Greek letters and coding: a 'beta' version is pre-release version.) Different beta readers have different styles; some are very good with punctuation and grammar, and others prefer to help with plot. Some do both.
