Please continue, this is heart-wrenchingly sad, the story has lots potential. Unless of course this is to stay one-shot. But that would be a waste of plto, wouldn't you say?

What a little gem of a fic. Your use of language, especially in the last third is just beautiful. In particular the last four lines.
The could not see what was right in front of their faces. They couldn't see what should be as plain as the sunburst in the sky or the crescent moon among the stars. They couldn't see it, and they wouldn't. Not in a million years. Not in a million decades.
